Equity benchmarks extended rally with the Nifty inching towards the 7650 level supported by capital goods, banking & financials and metals stocks. The index rose 59.15 points or 0.78 percent to 7642.55 and the Sensex gained 172.95 points or 0.68 percent to 25569.41.

Key benchmark indices edged higher in early trade as firmness in Asian stocks boosted sentiment. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex and the 50-unit CNX Nifty, both, scaled record high. The Sensex was up 122.78 points or 0.48%, up close to 15 points from the day's low and off about 60 points from the day's high. The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. The BSE Mid-Cap index rose almost 1%. The BSE Small-Cap index rose more than 1%.

The index surged 183.26 points at the day's high of 25,579.72 in early trade, a lifetime high for the index. The index rose 106.59 points at the day's low of 25,503.05 in early trade. 

The CNX Nifty was up 45.35 points or 0.6% to 7,628.75. The index hit a high of 7,629.80 in intraday trade, a lifetime high for the index. The index hit a low of 7,580.25 in intraday trade.
